2013 Malvazija (Simcic, Edi)

Edi Simcic, Malvazija, Brda, Slovenia 2013

100% Malvazija

HONEYSUCKLE, ORANGE BLOSSOM, SMOKEY OAK

Edi Simcic makes wines that are divisive. Often exotic and delicious, and often modern while simultaneously rustic. Traditionalists think his wines are too rich and oaked, modernists think his wines are too unusual and uncommon. Malvasia, here called the Slovenian name Malvazija, is a grape often reserved for desert wines, or blended into other wines for a hint of exotic floral. Aged to maturity, Edi's is dry, plush and highly aromatic. The Bentley of Gewurz-like whites.

Serving Suggestions: Scallops and lobster with fois gras reduction, topped with marmalade chutney and fried sage.

2013 Red "Duet" (Simcic, Edi)

Edi Simcic, Red "Duet", Brda, Slovenia 2013

80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc

BLACK PLUM & MISSION FIG, WALNUT & CEDAR, DISTINCTIVE SAVORY STREAK

Slovenia’s Brda, just across the border from and contiguous with Italy’s Friuli, shares many of the latter’s specialties including a special proclivity for a handful of French native varieties. The famous trio of Bordeaux does tremendous work here, and this combination of Merlot and the two Cabernets is simultaneously reminiscent of their Southwestern French homeland and resolutely its own creature. Oily garnet in the glass, its intensely striking appearance is just the prelude...

Serving Suggestion: Grilled steak w/ bourbon & mushroom sauce. Buckwheat noodles w/ potatoes, mushrooms, sage, & fontina.
